The Mondraker Chrono DC R is an alloy cross-country hardtail with no motor, so the engine is you. It runs a 120mm RockShox fork with a lockout lever on the bars, 29in wheels and 2.4in Maxxis Ardent tyres, plus a dropper post to get the seat out of the way on the descents.

Mondraker's XC Forward Geometry gives it a longer front end and short stem, which keeps it steady when the trail points down. SRAM Eagle 12-speed gears, SRAM Level brakes and Mavic wheels keep it simple to live with. It weighs 13.9 kg.

A good pick for a first proper mountain bike, or a quick hardtail for the after-work loop. Flick the lockout on for the ride to the trailhead and it won't bob along like a nodding dog.
